The ChampCar World Series has been terminated with immediate effect, such that ChampCar teams, drivers, and key events will join the 2008 IndyCar schedule.
Jensen MotorSport (“JMS”) has been a long-time competitor in the ChampCar and ChampCar Atlantic categories. JMS has roots stemming way back to the early days of the Formula Atlantic championship in the early 1970’s, when Bruce Jensen was a driver in the championship. Through many years, the Jensen family has been active in the Atlantic, Indy Lights, and ChampCar series. This news is the end of an era of professional open-wheel road & street racing in North America.
However, Jensen management views this merger as a positive for the sport going forward. Having two major open-wheel series made it difficult to market the product to corporate sponsors, due to the confusion in the media of what the merits were of each series.
At this time of uncertainty, it is widely known that the ATLANTIC championship will continue in 2008 with a revised schedule. The revisions may well improve the schedule, but replacing less well attended ChampCar events, with events that are more popular including the traditional Atlantic support event for the Montreal Grand Prix F1 event in June.
